Calling all artist…First Annual – Paint The Fort Plein Aire Painting Competition- Saturday, October 22, 2016

Paint the Fort Plein Air Painting Competition and Exhibition, sponsored by Fort Uncompahgre on the Old Spanish Trail and Gallery de la Luz, will be held on Saturday, October 22nd. 2016. Participating painters will have one day (12 hour period) to render and submit a piece of art, using Fort Uncompahgre or Confluence Park as their inspiration.  Artists are invited to enter one piece into the competition.

  • Eligibility: Competition is open to all residents of the Western Slope.

Entrants under 18 should register in the youth category.

  • Registration Deadline: Friday, October 21st

$20 fee for adults, $5 fee for youths

  • Late Registration Deadline: Saturday, October 22nd

$25 fee for adults, $10 fee for youths

  • Painting: Painting will take place on Saturday, October 22nd.

Check-in at Gallery de la Luz, 128 Palmer Street, Delta, starting at 7 a.m.  Canvases or papers will be stamped.  Work must be stamped in order to be included in the exhibition and judging.  Deadline for returning finished work is 7p.m. on the 22nd, no exceptions.

  • Painting Area: Painting must be done within the areas of Fort Uncompahgre and Confluence Park.
  • Format: Original two-dimensional works in oil, acrylic, gouache, watercolor or pastel on paper or canvas may be created during this event. Canvas/paper plus frame shall be less than or equal to 28” in any one direction.
  • Framing: Deadline for framing is 8:00p.m. Saturday, October 22nd. All works must have a hanging wire. Stretched canvases do not need a frame but should be wired and ready to hang. No supplies are provided, but framing worktables will be available until 8:00p.m.
  • Labeling: Please have back of work labeled with the following: Artist’s Name, Title, Medium, approximate location of subject and price.
  • Hanging: Show will be curated and hung by Gallery de la Luz
  • Judging: Judging will take place on Tuesday, October 25th.

This year’s judge is Judy Hazen, Ridgeway, CO   Judge is not affiliated with Fort Uncompahgre or Gallery de la Luz.

  • Criteria: Judging criteria includes but is not limited to: Theme – how well the piece captures some essence of Fort Uncompahgre and Confluence Park. Judging will be based on Creativity and Originality, Quality of Execution and Presentation as well.
  • Prizes: Judge will select Best of Show ($250), 2nd Place ($150), 3rd Place ($100), Youth (2- $50 awards). The Judges selections will be announced on Friday, October 28th at an Opening Reception. Visitors to the Gallery will vote for the People’s Choice Award which will be awarded at the close of the show, Wednesday, November 23rd.
  • Sale of Work: All works entered into the competition must be for sale.

Gallery will retain 30% of all sales. 70% commission to be paid to artists within 2 weeks of the close of the show.

  • Opening Reception: An Opening Reception will be held on Friday October 28th, 5-7p.m.

Artwork will remain on display at the Gallery until Saturday, November 26th (closed for Thanksgiving November 24th).  Unsold work must be picked up by Friday, December 2nd.
